March 2017

March 21, 2017

Dear members of the Georgetown Community:

We may be coming off a blizzard and frigid temperatures, but we at Georgetown Public Schools are preparing for extended school year programming for our students. During the next few months, special education TEAMS will be meeting to determine eligibility for said programming.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts uses what is called “The Regression Model” in determining this eligibility. All must remember that every child regresses during the summer months. It must be determined whether a child’s regression would likely be substantial, and whether or not the child would require a greater than usual time to recoup learned skills after a break in services.

Extended school year services look different for all students, depending upon their areas and levels of need. If you are interested in learning more about the services being offered during the summer of 2017, I highly encourage you to attend the next SEPAC meeting. It is being held on Tuesday, March 28, at 7:00 in the Penn Brook Elementary School Library. I will have a power point describing services, and will answer all of your questions.

For those of you who are unable to attend, please log on to the Georgetown Public Schools website. I have posted a considerable amount of information about the programs available. Additionally, I have posted registration forms for the summer camps available at Georgetown Public Schools. While you are there, please check out all of the information on my web site. It’s a work in progress, but much has been added. Please let me know if you find it helpful, and if there is other information you would like shared there.

Spring is in the air, and I wish you all a wonderful season! As always, stop by the office and say hi. I am so happy to chat my new Georgetown friends!

Sincerely,

Jack Tiano

Director of Student Services
